“On Google” means three different things, and you want all three. There is your Business Profile (the panel with your name, hours and reviews), the map results for local searches, and the organic results — the normal blue links. Each is claimed differently. Here is the order to do it in.
Profile and map results can be live within days. Organic rankings take months.
Create or claim your Google Business Profile
This is the fastest win and the foundation for local search. Go to google.com/business and either create a profile or claim an existing one that Google has already generated for your business.
Fill in everything: exact business name, the right primary category, service areas or a physical address, hours, website, and a description. Add your logo and real photos — profiles with photos get materially more clicks.
Then verify it. Google will offer a method — video, phone, postcard or email. Until you verify, the profile is not public. Verification can take anywhere from minutes to a few days.
Get into the map results
Once verified, your profile can appear in the “map pack” — the block of three local businesses with a map that shows above the normal results for searches like “electrician near me” or “accountant Pretoria”. Getting in and ranking there depends on:
- Proximity — how close you are to the searcher (you cannot control this, but service-area settings help)
- Relevance — categories, services and description matching the search
- Prominence — reviews, especially recent ones, plus mentions of your business across the web
Reviews are the lever you have most control over. See how to get more Google reviews for a system that stays within the rules.
Rank in the organic results
This is your website’s job, and it takes the longest. Google can only rank pages it has found, understood and judged worth showing.
Get indexed. Set up Google Search Console, verify your site and submit your sitemap. This tells Google every page you want it to know about. A new site can take days to weeks to appear.
Give Google something to rank. A page titled “Home” does not tell Google what you do. You need a clear page for each service and, ideally, for each area you serve, with titles and headings that match what people search. This is the logic behind our service and area pages.
Earn trust over time. Ranking is partly about authority, which builds through quality content and other sites linking to you. This is the slow part, and it is what ongoing SEO works on.
If your site is not showing up at all, work through why is my website not showing on Google first.
The quickest path if you need results now
Profile and map results can be live within days. Organic rankings take months. If you need enquiries in the meantime, Google Ads puts you at the top of the results immediately while the rest builds — see SEO vs Google Ads.
